Project Kryptonite: Repelling Bad Guys with the Power of Positive Presence

Is the way you portray yourself a strategy to avoid being targeted by predators? And does this play any role in dating safety?

Heck, yes. As part of the dating safety research I’ve been doing, I’ve become fascinated by body language and what significance it plays, if any, in being attractive to criminals. This, of course, is a real tangent from the dangers from our typical online dating safety topics. To take a look at our other features, please visit our blog page or our home page.

I think this topic is super informative, especially for the first date resulting from a dating app connection as well as in every aspect of life. So, with all that said …

Have you heard of the superhero stance?

It might sound ridiculous if you’ve never tried the superhero stance, but, in my opinion, it is an incredibly powerful tool.

Striking a pose.

What is it and how do you do it?

Get in front of a mirror and, having fun with it, strike a pose like Wonder Woman or Superman or whoever your superhero is. Once you’re satisfied with your pose, try to imagine you have the powers of your superhero.

The empowering movement of the superhero stance lies not just in the physical pose, but in the intention and energy behind it. It's a declaration of confidence, a visualization of inner strength, and a mindset that you are ready to take action.

Here are some reasons it’s so powerful:

1. Expansive Posture: The superhero stance is all about taking up space. Shoulders back, chest open, head held high – these radiate confidence and readiness. Imagine Wonder Woman standing tall, hands on her hips, facing down a challenge.

2. Centered Balance: The stance is also about grounding and stability. Feet shoulder-width apart, core engaged, weight evenly distributed – this conveys a sense of control and confidence in one's own power. Think of Black Panther standing firm, ready to pounce.

3. Forward Focus: The superhero stance isn't just about defense; it's about being ready to leap into action. A slight lean forward, eyes focused on the horizon, shows a proactive and determined mindset. Picture Captain America, shield raised, ready to charge.

4. Power in Stillness: While the superhero stance can be a prelude to movement, it's also powerful in its stillness. Holding the pose for a few breaths allows you to internalize the feeling of confidence and strength, preparing you for whatever comes next.

Remember, the most empowering superhero stance is the one that feels right for you. Channel your inner superhero, find your own power pose, and own it! You might find that this empowering exercise spills over into all areas of your life.

Here are some additional tips for making your superhero stance even more empowering:

  • Visualize your hero: Think of your favorite superhero and imagine yourself embodying their confidence and strength.

  • Focus on your breath: Deep, controlled breaths can help you center yourself and connect with your inner power.

  • Set an intention: What do you want to achieve with your superhero stance? Focus on that goal and let it fuel your confidence.

  • Practice makes better: The more you practice your superhero stance, the more natural and empowering it will feel.

  • For me, the more I laughed with it and made it a fun exercise, the more I got out of it.

Be your own superhero!

Why are we talking about superheroes and their stances in a dating safety blog?

Because the topic of our next blog is – how are crime victims chosen by predators?

Are they chosen at random? OR …

Are they chosen because of non-verbal cues that bad guys perceive as opportunity?

Please visit the next blog in which we explore the way we present ourselves to the world and the results of a fascinating study where inmates were chosen to view videos of random people and “select” who they chose as a “potentially easy victim.”

The results are unique and intriguing. Not only that, but the results are illuminating because there is so much insight into body language and non-verbal, unconscious cues. One of the key words is unconscious. This is not about victim blaming. The bad guy is always and the only one at fault for the crimes he or she commits. The victim is never to blame or in any way responsible. This blog is not suggesting that. If you feel this blog does suggest that the victim is to blame, I want to change the wording or tone.
